Practice Makes Perfect
Today was a long day, but a good one. As I was leaving work I turned on my Uber App. Ready to give a ride to whoever needed one. Waiting...waiting...waiting. That's the hardest part. I am a person that can't sit still, so I start driving a direction hoping a ride will pop up sooner rather than later. I need direction, a purpose. It's what I am seeking when...ding.
Yes! A ride. Time to pick up my first passenger. It was a student and his friend at a high school near my workplace. They just needed a ride home after early release from classes. It is the final week before Christmas. They kept the conversation between them going, so I didn't interrupt their discussion about plans they had once they arrived at home. After dropping them off, I started to head in the direction of my home.
I did not get very far before I had another rider requesting my services. It ended up being a student from the same high school. He was headed home as well. We talked about Christmas and whether either of us was prepared for it. We compared notes on how much the celebration and importance of Christmas has changed over time. It was a wonderful conversation.
When I was driving away from this boy's house, I had the following thought. Is this what it will be like when I have kids? Driving to and from school. Dropping them off, bringing things for them at school, picking them and their friends up, driving everyone home, and so on. My next thought was: I can't wait! For now, practice makes perfect.
